Image

Sparsh Classroom Diary

Image
Our Sparsh classroom in Petlawad celebrates Friday as a day to learn while gaming and exploring the things around them. On one of Fridays in April, our class facilitator Kamlesh brought the idea of exploring the body and the way we and others see and touch it. Kamlesh facilitated the discussion about Good Touch & Bad Touch while exploring the correct names of body parts to impart awareness among the children of class and furthermore children with whom these children engage beyond the classroom space. The response of the children was quite receptive towards this discussion and they also took part while addressing the doubts of their mates. We are aspiring to run 10 such community classrooms in the villages of Mahidpur Road Cluster. Support us: https://cutt.ly/jgEH6dP

From the Researcher's Diary

Image
We are assessing the learning outcomes of children in the villages of the Ujjain district. A local youth researcher looks for 10 children from each village to answer questions giving an account of their mathematical and comprehensive abilities. We plan to cover 17 such villages. As the researcher reaches a new village, the children surround him. The early volunteers who are also government school children bravely get in other children to participate. It doesn't take long for parents to get attracted to an unknown commotion in their village, curiously trying to find who is interested in their child's studies. They often encourage their children to perform, often prompting them to write answers. Since the pandemic has knocked down the education structure, especially in the grassroots, it has become imperative to understand the learning gaps it has created among the children in the villages. MGMD is curious to understand this gap and design an informed intervention, in our quest t

A Wish To Overcome The Hurdles: Story of Rohan

Image
Rohan (changed name) is 12 years old. He lives in Petlawad Village. He is enrolled in the Government School of his village where he was not able to go for almost a year & more because of lockdown. When he first came to know about the community classroom, which was initiated by Mera Gaon Meri Dunia in his village, he was the first one to stand at the door of the community center with a lot of ambition in his bright sparkling eyes. Rohan used to struggle while reading Hindi as he shared in one of our book reading sessions. We have some storybooks for our children to which he seemed quite fascinated and asked for takeaway them for home-reading. He shared the wish that he wants to read fluently whenever he reads something. He has now built a habit of reading one page of any Hindi book and marking the words with which he struggles and learning their pronunciation with the help of family members, his mates at the community center, and our class facilitator. Mera Gaon Meri Dunia is runni

Mission Malwa: Story of Aarti

The young women of a small village named Hatpiplia in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh had to travel around 20 km to go to their coaching to clear the Police entrance exam. Not any more!  Aarati, a young woman from the village dreamt to have a centre in the village. She is on her way to establishing a community centre where she has made a collective of all the interested women and is beginning to start group training for them. They are also contributing to getting a trainer weekly who helps them with the curriculum.  Mission Malwa is a fellowship opportunity to support women like Aarati to realize their dream through need specific mentoring and a basic stipend to get them going . Plustrust and Mera Gaon Meri Dunia have dared to reimagine the grassroots scenario of rural women entrepreneurship in the Malwa belt.  If you know a rural woman with a dream that has a social impact, feel free to reach out to us at vasudha@meragaonmeridunia.org

Story of a Story-teller: Sneak-peak into SPARSH classrooms

Image
Sandhya is from a small village in Mahidpur block of Ujjain district of MP. Born into a family where she is the first one to go to school, she expressed her zeal to learn every day.  Sandhya (a class 4 student) can be spotted sitting at the back, quiet and engaged with the teacher in the class. However, when she is repeatedly disturbed by another student through constant chatting she expressively says, 'Rohan is disturbing me. I need quiet to think and form a story'. The youth facilitator who teaches in the community classroom shares that the space that is created at the centre where each student is repeatedly asked what they are feeling regarding the things they are doing helps children a lot to be more expressive.  As Sandhya started coming to the centre, she used to face challenges in addition to carrying, multiplication and division. She used to read simple 3-4 letter words in Hindi but her reading speed was low. The teacher says that her speed of reading has improved in th
